Saturday, October 1, 2005 at 12:00 noon St. Paul and the Redeemer Church, Chicago. Featuring the Honorable Michael W. Stuttley, Presiding Judge, Juvenile Court, 6th District Municipal Court

In Chicago, 8,539 public school students were arrested in 2003—43 percent for simple assault involving no injuries or weapons and often for nothing more than a threat or minor fight. Most of these students were young Black men. Every day young people are brought before Judge Michael W. Stuttley for arraignment, court proceedings and sentencing. As they begin their court proceedings, they also begin their criminalization process.

Judge Stuttley, while acting within the law, helps to guide these young people out of harm’s way and encourages them to become productive citizens in their communities. Come and listen to the ways that our court system is “rigged” (my words; my opinion) against young Black and Latino men. Find out what our community can do to halt the parade of young Black men headed for jails and prisons across the state when they should be going to colleges and universities. Judge Stuttley is highly regarded for his legal expertise, his dedication to improving our justice system and his innovative solutions in the Juvenile Court. He was born in the Altgeld Gardens Public Housing Development where he continues to mentor elementary school youth on a regular basis.
