"NCBCP Atlanta Katrina Empowerment Expo to Provide Food, Fun, Facts and Forums"

Coalition working to protect right to vote for displaced Katrina survivors
ATLANTA, - In an effort to reach displaced Louisiana residents, The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP) has joined forces with the National Urban League (NUL) and other prominent national and local Atlanta minority organizations to hold the Atlanta Katrina Empowerment Expo Saturday April 8, 2006 from 2 – 6 PM. The free event will be held at the Atlanta Life Building, 100 Auburn Ave, Atlanta. For more information call (404) 664-7588.
In addition to music, food, and games for the children, Katrina survivors currently living in or around Atlanta will have the opportunity to learn more about the absentee and early-voting process and the importance of voting to ensure their right to a speedy return to the crescent city. Additionally, attendees will hear from New Orleans mayoral candidates on their plans for rebuilding the city. Activities include:
· Housing and Tax Assistance
· Children’s Activities (face painting, coloring stations and balloons)
· Health and Family Counseling
· Absentee Voter Training Assistance
· Music, Entertainment, Refreshments and Giveaways
· Meet and Greet City Council Candidates
· New Orleans Citizens Forum
· New Orleans Mayoral Candidates Forum
The Atlanta Expo is one of a series of Empowerment Weekends hosted by The "Louisiana Unity '06 Rebuild Hope Now Coalition" campaign to raise awareness among Katrina evacuees about the unique methods of voting for the April 22nd elections in New Orleans. Empowerment Expos have already taken place in Houston and New Orleans. Remaining cities include Atlanta and Baton Rouge on April 15. The group aims to educate New Orleanians on their five key rights:
• The right to vote regardless of current location
• The right to vote during the early voting period (April 10-13 and April 15)
• The right to vote by absentee ballot
• The right to vote in person in Orleans Parish
• The right to vote without presenting any photo identification to election officials
According to NUL President Marc Morial, "The National Urban League is proud to be involved in this much-needed initiative to ensure those who are impacted the most by restoration efforts are heard."
