300 Black men and supporters will gather to celebrate the launch of the publication at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 13th at Dunlevy Milbank Center in Harlem
Harlem, NY - 300 Black men and supporters of Proud Poppa, a ground-breaking community empowerment newspaper created to celebrate, elevate and replicate fatherhood success principles in the Black community, are expected to participate in a launch Celebration Ceremony at Dunlevy Milbank Community in Harlem on Thursday, July 12, 2006 13th at 6:00 p.m. The event, hosted by Proud Poppa Advisory Board Chairman, Reverend Alfonso Wyatt, is also CO-produced by the newly found organization, Harlem Men Stand Up.
Proud Poppa, published by Dove Ventures, LLC and modeled after popular parenting publications like Big Apple Parent, released its premiere Harlem Edition just before Father’s Day and has been met with rave reviews because of its editorial focus on parenting and personal development success strategies for Black men. “The mission of Proud Poppa is to celebrate, elevate and replicate fatherhood success principles in the Black community,” said Shawn Dove, the publisher and founder. “We believe that the cavalry is not coming to save the day in our communities and that Black men and mentors must creatively lead and leverage their social capital and personal assets to create community collaborations for healing, empowerment and social entrepreneurship.”
The premiere edition includes features on retired New York Knick Allan Houston’s annual Fathers Know Best Basketball Retreat; strategies for coping with depressed dads by Dr. Derek Suite; and a riveting challenge to Black men to respond to the crisis of rape and sexual assault in the Black community, written by Onaje Mu’id. Departments include Social Entrepreneurs Express, Health, Wellness & Healing, and Assets & Tips, where Black women share their voice.
There is also a compelling youth development aspect of Proud Poppa, called Middle Passage Press, a pull-out youth-produced newspaper written by middle and high school boys, modeled after Harlem Overheard, the publication Dove launched during his tenure as a senior executive with the Harlem Children’s Zone, Inc. The young men will learn journalism, advertising sales, marketing, graphic design skills as a result of their work with Middle Passage Press.
“I have read Proud Poppa cover to cover and had a bunch delivered to my Fathers Count program in the Bronx,” said Linda Lausell-Bryant, Executive Director of Inwood House, a comprehensive human services organization in New York. “I loved it. The articles are not ‘fluffy’ but are substantive which is very refreshing. Also, it’s very candid and I like that. As the wife of a proud poppa, I love how it applies to all the dads.”
