The Gantt Report - Don’t act surprised. The Panama City jury that found boot camp law enforcers not guilty in the brutal death of 14-year-old Martin Anderson is not the first jury to acquit police officers of obvious misconduct.
In a society where Black youth and adults are seen as less of a person than non-Blacks, it is not surprising that certain society members can do anything they want to any Black person and get away with it.
Yes, the punching, kicking and deprivation of oxygen of Martin Anderson was video taped but so was the Rodney King beating. Videos also exist showing civil rights protesters getting clubbed, shot with water hoses and having vicious dogs being ordered to attack them.
The Panama City jury heard testimony that it was not unusual for seven men and one woman to use brute force to control a child.
Well, my research and American history indicates that not too long ago one white man with a whip could control 70 Black slaves. Now you want me to believe that it takes seven grown white folks with guns, batons, pepper spray, mace and tasers to beat a child to death to get him under control.
I don’t need to comment about what happened in the Panama City Courtroom because I’ve been writing about what happened there and in other American courtrooms for 30 years. Just go back and read your Gantt Report archives.
The treatment, the dispositions, the rulings and the verdicts that Black people get in the judicial system are not the same as everyone else gets.
If Black people want justice, should they seek Biblical justice? Should we seek to beat someone to death every time one of our own is beaten to death?
Should this be a case of an eye for an eye?
Probably not, but the truth is that Black people have to do something.
Justice will not be given to us on a platter. I hate to say it, but if we want justice, we may have to take it.
Too many African Americans go along with whatever they’re told. I’ve heard some ridiculous comments in the hood like “The white Sheriff’s Deputies must not have killed the Black child because the white jury said they didn’t.”
You tell me, where else in the world can you get so many all-white juries?
in cases that involved Black victims or Black litigants. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find juries composed of all one race anywhere in the world.
What about Africa? No, there are judges and jurors of all races in deepest, darkest Africa.
It is a sad day in America. The things that were done to that Black teenager in Panama City would be heinous if it were done to Ted Bundy or Charles Manson.
It is obvious we need justice. If you’re scared to fight for it at least you ought to support the people that are fighting for justice for you. (Gantt's new book "Beast Too: Dead Man Writing" is coming soon. Contact Lucius at www.allworldconsultants.net)
