"I Know How The Dog Feels - by Lucius Gantt"

The Gantt Report - I’m sorry to say but I had a “Dog The Bounty Hunter” moment!

If you’ve been keeping up with it “Dog” was tape recorded using the “N” word.

His excuse, he said, was the word was just casually used sometimes in his business and his home. Of course, he said he was not a racist and has no hatred toward Black people as a group, so to speak.

I feel where “Dog” was coming from in terms of words that he uses privately and among friends. I believe most of us do.

The adjectives we use and the conversations we have are a lot different from the words we use to communicate at work or in public.

If fact, don’t ever think that Boss Man and Miss Daisy doesn’t call you one thing on the job and another thing when that Jack Daniels kicks in in the trailer park.

I wish I could be a fly on the wall during the discussions that white folks have when the Black maid and the Hispanic gardener are gone home.

Anyway, too make a long story short, I live in an area where each homeowner has to have at least two acres of land. Without going into detail, few of us want to cut two or three acres of grass every two weeks so most of my neighbors are not Black.

I was talking to one particular neighbor that happened to be a good friend of mine. We were going back and forth about how costs have risen on everything and I was explaining how I wanted to do some excavation work on my lake to dig it out and make it a little deeper in certain areas.

And then it happened!

Before I knew it, I yelled, “The cra….” And then I caught myself!

I was so comfortable with my white friend; I started talking to him just like I would talk to my friends of color.

I don’t think anything would have went down if I hadn’t caught myself. Believe it or not some people enjoy it when slang words from different cultures are used around them. Some people even take it as a badge of honor when you feel comfortable to talk like you usually talk.

Yeah, I feel you “Dog”, we all have said things that were not politically correct. The difference between you and me is that I’m not going to try and cover up my miscues. I’ll admit it and move on.

Whatever people say I said, yes I said it and more likely than not, I meant it! (Gantt's new book "Beast Too: Dead Man Writing" is coming soon. Contact Lucius at www.allworldconsultants.net)
