THE BLACK DENTISTS IN THE NEW MILLINEUM: WHERE ARE THEY?
by Dr. Michael Rowland

Do you know what dentists really do?

Dentists are responsible for the detection, diagnosis, and management of the oral cavity. While some people may think of dentists as filling and drilling teeth there is a great deal more involved in the profession of dentistry. Dentists do extract teeth, but they also straighten, align, repair teeth, and perform surgery on a variety of areas in the mouth from gums to bones in the mouth. Dentists can provide cosmetic enhancements to enhance facial features and help restore damage from traumatic accidents to the mouth area. Consider all the things you do with your mouth from eating, chewing, laughing, singing and speaking concerns the mouth so it is imperative to properly maintain this area of your body. Dentists are educators who are responsible for instructing their patients and the public about the importance of good oral health care, including proper brushing techniques, flossing and how medications may affect your dental care.
And you thought dentists only pulled teeth!

Is a career in Dentistry for you?

Generally, students who like science, particularly Biology and have an understanding of how the human body works are good candidates for the profession. Another important aspect of dentistry is the ability to work with and enjoy using your hands. Others who might be a good candidate for a career in dentistry are creative people who enjoy making and creating things with their hands. One of the most important components of dentistry is the ability to work well with and communicate well with people. Many Dentists enjoy the benefits of being entrepreneurs by owning their own business, which requires good leadership and business skills.

Maybe you feel you are suited for a career in the health profession but not quite sure if Dentistry is a good profession for you. As with any profession/occupation you may be considering, you should spend a considerable amount of time observing and learning about the field you are interested in working. Begin by calling your family dental office or any general dentist's office or your state dental society for referrals and inform them you are interested in dentistry and would like to find out more about the profession by observing a dentist. Most dentists are very receptive to speaking with students about dentistry and would welcome your questions about the dental profession with enthusiasm. However, be prepared for your visit, take notes of your observations and ask questions about the procedures being observed. Pay close attention to the details of the dental office operation during your visit, for instance, notice how the dentists communicates with his patients and his staff members. Notice how she manages the business side of dentistry.

* Ask the dentist why he/she chose dentistry as a profession?

* How did they prepare for dental school?

* What would they recommend to help you become a dentist?

* What does he/she like and dislike about their job/profession?

* What is a routine day like?

These basic types of questions should help you gain some perspective of the dental profession. However, you should visit several dentists to compare practices, the dentists, and their ideas about dentistry and their recommendations to you as a potential dentist.
